Author, journalist and broadcaster Sam Hanna Bell fought tirelessly to establish, promote and protect the unique cultural and literary identity of Northern Ireland. As a legendary radio broadcaster working alongside luminaries such as Louis MacNeice and Paul Muldoon, Bell recognised the need to broadcast local material to local people. He pioneered the production of grassroots features programmes for BBC Northern Ireland, collecting and broadcasting fast-vanishing folklore and folk music from remote country areas.
