The Swilly and the Wee Donegal

The largely mountainous county of Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland, was of particular interest to transport enthusiasts with its two, very different, narrow gauge systems. This title looks at the county's railways as they were in the 1950s - from Buncrana in the north to Ballyshannon in the south, with a diversion en route to visit Killybegs.

Description

The remote, largely mountainous county of Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland, was of particular interest to transport enthusiasts with its two, very different, narrow gauge systems - the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company (LLSR) and the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee (CDR). Broad gauge lines were limited to short sections of the Great Northern (GNR(I)) - between Londonderry and Strabane and a portion of the Bundoran branch west of the border at Belleek. As will be seen, the GNR also operated bus services in the county. In this volume, Tony Burges takes a look at the county's railways as they were in the 1950s - from Buncrana in the north to Ballyshannon in the south, with a diversion en route to visit Killybegs. So come and join us for a ride on 'The Swilly' and 'The Wee Donegal'.
